Performance Objectives: The candidate shall be given a random patient care scenario in which the candidate shall be able to:

Ø       initiate an adequate scene size-up to include: Mechanism of injury/ Nature of illness, number of patients, hazards/safety concerns, additional equipment, and triage.

Ø       form general impressions upon approaching the patient while observing the following: patient’s sex, approximate age, obvious abnormalities, obvious distress, and position.

Ø       conduct an initial assessment to include: c-spine control (If needed), level of consciousness check, airway assessment (maneuvers as needed), breathing assessment, circulation (including pulses, skin condition, and gross bleeding), and prioritization of the patient as critical or stable.

Ø       determine whether the patient requires a rapid physical exam or focused physical and conducts the physical exam appropriately to include the skills of inspection, auscultation, palpation, and comparison.

Ø       obtain the patient’s medical history utilizing the SAMPLE history method.

Ø       obtain a complete set of baseline vitals to include: Pulse (rate, rhythm, strength) skin (color, temperature, condition) level of consciousness, respiratory (rate, rhythm, depth) lung sounds, and pupil size and response.

Ø       make appropriate transportation decisions based on the patient’s needs and status.

Ø       conduct a detailed assessment if needed while transporting.

Ø       conduct an ongoing assessment that reevaluates the effectiveness of all treatment initiated, and changes in patient’s condition or status.

Performance Evaluation: The evaluator shall present the candidate with a specific scenario in which a victim will simulate predetermined complaints and/or conditions that will require the candidate to conduct an adequate assessment and collect critical data in order to formulate a treatment plan. The evaluator will utilize a standardized assessment sheet to document the actions of the candidate as adequate or inadequate.
